America’s 250th Anniversary and Fourth of July Flag Cake Recipe

This year we excitedly celebrate America’s 250th anniversary! As we gather in homes, concerts, picnics and fireworks displays, we are all reminded that this year is very special; for two and a half centuries, Americans have had triumph, challenges, and yet we have persevered. With hope and gratitude, we remember our founders and honor the service of millions of people who have preserved our freedoms through their hard work, sacrifice, and commitment to the common good.

The 250th anniversary is all of our story, working together for a better future. America has rich diversity and traditions that have shaped our country, all of us united in pride, hope and love towards it. As our families gather around picnics, parks, porches and churches to celebrate this historic milestone, we celebrate faith, family, service, and gratitude for our American life.

We commemorate 250 years of independence as we look toward the future with optimism. This milestone encourages us to share with our children and grandchildren the lessons of our nation’s past. We are inspired to become thoughtful citizens and to strengthen our communities as we write the next chapters of our nation’s history with integrity and courage.

This year, like many other families across America, we will cook and share with others our refreshing patriotic Flag Cake. This lovely dessert has been in our family for decades, and over the years it looks different but is always gorgeous and stupendous! I started making it because it is delicious, and has those prized colors, red, white and blue. It features a moist butter yellow cake topped with a light lemon cream cheese topping, fresh blueberries, and sweet strawberries arranged in the shape of the American flag. This beautiful cake is always the centerpiece of our Fourth of July gatherings, backyard barbecues, family reunions, and fireworks celebrations! The combination of creamy topping, fresh berries, and tender cake creates a dessert that is elegant and easy to serve to a crowd.

The Fourth of July is for family, friends, and celebrating the freedoms that we enjoy. We always decorate the table, the front door with a 4th of July welcome wreath, and our outside breezeway table and couches too! Adding to the celebration is our colorful flag cake, representing the spirit of Independence Day with bright red strawberries, deep blue blueberries, and a creamy white topping that proudly displays the colors of the American flag. This year we honor our 250th, so it is a very special one. It is a dessert that brings smiles to guests of all ages and often becomes the most photographed item on our holiday table!

What we love about this cake is its balance of flavors. The rich butter cake provides a tender base, while the lemon-kissed cream cheese topping adds a light tangy sweetness. Fresh berries provide natural color and freshness, making the cake feel cool and refreshing even on the hottest summer afternoons. And, what makes this cake a standout is that luscious topping!

Whether you serve this patriotic desert with grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue, grilled chicken, pork chops, shrimp or something else, it’s always a winner! It pairs wonderfully with fresh lemonade, sweet tea, iced tea, fruit punch, or sparkling water. Because it is served chilled, it is especially welcome after a day spent outdoors enjoying parades, swimming, picnics, and fireworks.

Happy 4th of July as you celebrate with joy and pride. This is for you America, with love, always.
